Autism Awareness

bonTops = adaptive clothing

As the partners of Live On Goods continue to create awareness of the bonTops, we are also learning about wonderful opportunities for people with disabilities in our local community.  One such place that we discovered is the Children’s Autism Center, Inc.  Knowing that Laura’s nephew Billy, who has Autism, benefits from wearing a clothing protector, I made an appointment to meet with Jill Forte, the executive director of the Center.  I learned a lot about autism as I toured this amazing facility and asked Jill questions about the diagnosis and treatment for autism.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child’s ability to communicate and interact with others.  It also includes restricted repetitive behaviors, interests and activities.  These issues cause significant impairment in social, occupational and other areas of functioning.

  • Autism is a lifelong developmental disability

  • 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with Autism

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that pediatricians screen children for Autism at 18 months of age.

  • It is possible for adults to have Autism that has gone undiagnosed

  • An assessment/evaluation by a professional is highly recommended.  If Autism is diagnosed then an effective plan can be created and implemented.

Knowing that April is Autism awareness month if you want to get more information about Autism and its signs here are some good resources:

Autism Speaks.org

Talk About Curing Autism (www.tacanow.org)

Autism Society of Indiana  (www.inautism.org)

Children’s Autism Center (260)459-6040

At the end of our discussion, I showed Jill the bonTops.  Jill and her staff were  very interested in the bonTops and how they might be beneficial to some of the Center’s clients. They thought they were a much nicer looking adaptive clothing protector than others they are aware of.

The Live On Goods mission is to create products that allow people to have a social and enjoyable lifestyle. We will continue to create awareness of the bonTops to support our mission.

Until next time, take care and enjoy the beautiful spring flowers –

Helen
